US Stamp thoughts please
Mar 8th, 2018, 4:57am

I found this whilst going through an old album. (SG 161)
It doesn't appear to have a grill and is on a hard wove paper perf. 12.
The value appears to say SIX TENTS when viewed at normal size.

Scott Specialized is doing my head in.
I don't think it's Scott 186 because it is not soft paper.
I have a choice of 137 carmine rose, 148 rose, 159 brown rose or 170 rose which is on the hard white wove paper and worth a fortune in any condition.
Do you think I should send it to the PSE or am I dreaming?

There's a reason I have almost zero US  Grin Grin

Are you a member of SCF? If not, can I post a query there for you as it's full of knowledgeable US collectors?

My USPS 39th states 137 and 148 no secret marks

159, 170, 186 & 195 have a secret mark 'The first four vertical lines of the shading in the lower part of the left ribbon have been strengthened'

Other notes
137 with grill, white wove paper

148 carmine, brown carmine & violet carmine, white wove paper,

159 dull pink, white wove paper

170 dull rose,'1875 issue hard white wove paper no gum! were frequently cut apart by scissors, designs often damaged.'

186 pink, soft porous paper, thin to thick

195 dull rose ' 1880 issue no gum! soft porous paper

Because there are no used prices in the USPS for the special printings of '75 & '80 I would suggest it is unlikely to be 170 or 195.

My inclination is 159.

Thank you Feebletodix and Sherro for your replies.

I am going to give it a good wash and get rid of the three hinges on the back. I assume that these are safe to wash.

I have spent hours trying to find a driver for my USB microscope. Apparently it is not compatible with my new computer.
I will fire up my old laptop and see if I can have a good look at the paper. I am not sure now if it is even wove.
When I am sure of the facts I may take you up on your offer Sherro.

My USPS 39th ed, 2010, suggests that the value for no73 without grill was $70. Subsequent issues came with a variety of grills and one notable re-issue without. Since that has a value with of $24,000 I am reluctant to raise your hopes. Smiley

Thanks for the info.....its a long time since I sold on ebay. Anything over $40 would be nice.

I always started everything off at 99c - often caused a bidding war.....occasionally the item sold for - you guessed it 99c. Sometimes sales are quite illogical. One pre-paid PC sold for $84..... no idea why (I bought it from a stamp dealer for 30c). Other times items I though had reasonable value went for low money.
